报告人简况:
Yee Van joined the Environmental Change Institute at Oxford University in November 2023. Before this, she worked as a researcher at the Centre of Excellence Sustainable Process Integration Laboratory and a lecturer at the Faculty of Business and Management, Brno University of Technology. She is one of the contributors to a textbook (Sustainable Process Integration and Intensification: Saving Energy, Water and Resources) and a handbook (Handbook of Process Integration: Minimisation of Energy and Water Use, Waste and Emissions). Yee Van is the associate editor of the Journal of Cleaner Production (Elsevier) and Energy Sources, Part A: Recovery, Utilization, and Environmental Effect (Taylor and Francis Online). She also serves as a subject editor of Energy (Elsevier) under the topic of Energy-Economic-Environment. Yee Van was co-chair of two international conferences, the PRES (Conference Process Integration, Modelling and Optimisation for Energy Saving and Pollution Reduction) and SPIL (Sustainable Process Integration) conference series, and the International Conference on Low Carbon Asia committee. Yee Van is currently a member of the board of trustees of PRISE Foundation, which was established in 2023.
报告内容摘要:
Digitalisation continues to be a primary force reshaping economies, industries, and societies amid ongoing and future waves of innovation. It is currently paving the way for the emergence of a new wave, particularly driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and its evolved generation. It is shifting from a niche application to a general-purpose technology and a foundational piece of digital infrastructure that will underpin economic competitiveness, governance and public service delivery. Digitalisation undeniably enhances efficiency, productivity, and convenience, particularly in complex tasks. There are also voices on its contribution to stimulate energy transition through investment and the procurement agreement and green contracts. However, the narrative surrounding digitalisation is not entirely positive as it is also a challenge in the global effort to decarbonise. This talk explores the direct and indirect impacts of digitalisation on decarbonisation, discussing the dual role it plays across energy systems. On which side the double-edged sword falls will vary for each application and its deployment context. In this presentation, in the case of direct impact, special attention is given to the expanding energy demand of data centres and its GHG implications within shared socioeconomic pathways. The synthesised evidence on the indirect impacts of numerous digital applications in transport, building and industrial sectors will also be discussed.
